The Wall of Gorgan or the Red Snake

The Great Wall of Gorgan, or the Great Wall of Alexander or the Red Wall, also called the Red Snake, is located in Golestan province in the northeast of Iran. This huge wall with 200 km long, is the largest human-made wall after China wall. This wall is the world's largest defensive wall. This red clay brick wall is made during the Sassanid era. This wall prevented the entry of these ethnic groups into Iran in the Caucasus Mountains and the coastline of the Mazandaran Sea. This great wall also Sometimes called the Great Wall of Gorgan or the Sassanian Wall or locally as Sadd-e Anushirvan and Sadd-e Piruz. This wall starts from the west of Caspian sea and continues to east at Pishkamar mountains.

Interesting Facts About the Wall

- The wall is also named Red Snake because of its red-brick.
- This wall is 195 Km long.
- This wall start from the west of Caspian sea and continue to eat at Pishkamar mountains.
- There are also two smaller walls close it with the same age.
- Some Part of the western piece (Tammishe wall) is laid under the Caspian Sea.
- Some writers postulate that the Caspian Gates mentioned by Greek writers could originally have referred to a gate in the Wall of Gorgan.

This wall was as a castle for keeping the lands of Gorgan area and had over 30 forts along itself.
 Some historians believe that the wall built during the Parthians (247 BC–224 AD), and some parts of it have repaired at the Sassanid period (3rd to 7th century AD).
